I am constantly scribbling ideas and inspiration on scrap pieces of paper that I find in random places. Though I have an art journal that is designed to keep my ideas in one spot, sometimes it isn’t always practical to carry around. This month I am sharing a simple and quick project for taking the Instant Logo Cards Series 1 and Series 2 and creating simple jotter notebooks. I will probably throw one in my bag to keep with me at all times, but you could also use these as creative client gifts. You could encourage your clients to jot down notes regarding ideas for displaying their photos or little photography tips you give during their session. There could be endless ways to use the jotters.
Step 1: Create an 8.5×11 document in Photoshop using your choice of the Instant Logo Cards. You will want to extend the design on the left side of the card to create the back cover of the jotter. I changed the colors to match so I could use several designs, but maintain a consistent feel. Print your designs onto cardstock paper.
Basic Supplies:
Your printed 8.5×11 pages
Paper cutter
Baker’s twine
Grid paper
Small mini-bags
Step 2: Cut your out your designs
Step 3: Cut out grid paper to be just a bit smaller in length and width than the outer card cover. When folded together you do not want the grid paper to extend beyond the cover.
At this point you have a few options for ‘binding’ the jotter. The one I will explain here uses a sewing machine. If you do not have access to a sewing machine, continue past these steps.
Step 4: You can use a basic small stitch on a sewing machine to bind the jotter. Sew straight down the middle of the jotter leaving extra thread on the top and bottom. Once sewn you will need to double knot the extra thread and then cut off the remaining thread.
Two other options for binding the jotter are:
1. Cut the cover and inside pages in half. Use a small safety pin on a top corner to hold it together.
2. Cut the cover and inside pages in half. Punch hole in the top corner and tie with baker’s twine.
To package your jotters you can simply tie shut with baker’s twine or place the jotter (minus the cover) inside a small bag and tie closed.
