We interviewed Kim about the Painterly effects and here’s what she had to say:
How do you choose an image to apply this ‘Painterly’ effect to in order to turn it into a piece of fine art?
I usually find myself wanting to use this effect on images that have more art appeal rather than just a straight portrait. It can really enhance that feeling of art in a way unlike anything else and will get your clients just oohhhhing and ahhhing all over the place. It can be done really subtly or with more strength in the effect. Here are some of the things that I have found helpful in using this effect:
- I tend to look for images that have space around the subject that will allow for the effect to show without getting onto the subject itself. It is very important to not have the textures or brush strokes on the skin/hair or clothing. I simply erase the effect from the texture layers on any of these critical areas.
- I think it looks amazing on dynamic images with a lot of color and or texture. The painted brush strokes really add to the image bringing out the best of these areas making the image that much more striking. Some examples would be greenery, a textured colored wall, an urban scene and the sky looks incredible with it!
How do you present it to your client? Is it their favorite piece or one you think would work well with the effect?
We have a few examples of this effect on some of our sample displays in our studio. Sometimes a client will ask about it and request it specifically or sometimes we will see an image that is perfect for it and will make the suggestion.
One thing to note: A lot of times we use the effect on an image we love even if the client doesn’t want it and use it on Facebook, newsletters or our website. Because it is so unique and eye catching, it is a great way to set yourself apart and stand out from the crowd. It makes people stop and look a little harder and a little longer and well… Isn’t that what we all want? This gets them engaged more with you and your work and will help you in your marketing in very subtle but powerful ways.
How do you determine price compared to a regular portrait?
You can take the approach two different ways. If you charge a lot for it, then you can make it really special and market the effect from an exclusivity angle. On the other hand, you can add an upgrade fee to wall portraits to cover your time to complete the effect making it more affordable for people to do. This will get it out there more in your community making you more memorable and visible. Just make sure either way to price it to include the time you take on average to complete a piece. (Hint!!! Because it is such a simple and easy to use product, it doesn’t usually take longer than a few minutes to do! )
Do you hand sign the piece; how do you differentiate it from a regular portrait?
We do not treat it any differently than any other piece and I hand sign all of our wall portraits. I would like to also mention my preferred printing option is to have it done as a metallic gallery wrap. It really just makes the whole effect sing.
