Design Aglow's Boudoir Week 2016: Archetype Studio Inc.


Hi Koby & Terilyn! Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves? How long have you been a photography team? What came first, love or work?

Hi! We are so excited to be a part of Boudoir Week on Design Aglow!! Let’s see... a little about us... we met our senior year in high school, fell in love and were married after graduating Texas A&M (whoop!). Koby was working as an apprentice to a master photographer even back in high school, but I didn’t get involved with Koby’s studio until after we were married. His photography was mostly commercial at that time: catalog shoots, advertising/stock, and architectural photography. Later on, I opened a separate studio to focus on families/weddings. At the time, we thought it was wise to keep our companies as separate entities, but in hindsight I can see where this was creating some challenges – even in our personal relationship. Teamwork is the cornerstone of success. A few years ago, Koby and I had a serious discussion about our dreams and goals. This led to the decision to join our companies with a new singular focus and we now work together as one unit. The magic really started to happen when we discovered we both wanted the same thing out of life... And more importantly, that standing together, we were brave enough to reach for it.


Your boudoir photos are lovely. When did you decide to incorporate this niche into your business? Was it happenstance (say a friend asking if you’d be open to photographing them) or did you actively pursue it?

Thank you for the kind words!! Koby and I photographed a few boudoir sessions over the years per client requests, but it was never something we advertised or put extensive research into until after we re-branded in 2011.  The destination wedding market was our specific target and this put us in front of a new (to us) breed of clientele. The request for boudoir sessions came with about half the brides we booked, and Koby and I agreed this was a niche we needed to focus on. As artists, we are always striving to define our style and break away from the pack.  After a little more than a year of research and development focused on launching our boudoir line, a clear direction began to emerge and we have been refining it ever since.


How do you think working as a team (not to mention husband & wife) benefits your boudoir clients?

As a husband-wife team with a matched passion for the art of photography - on J’adore shoots we find that sets an inherent tone of comfort and respect.  Koby and I are extremely professional, but we are also fun and very interactive.  Another bonus, our clients are benefitting from two perspectives throughout the shoot. I’m constantly monitoring the details, keeping an eye on stray hairs, the fit of the wardrobe, etc. and Koby is focusing more on the overall look and feel.  


Do you remember your first boudoir shoot? What has (or hasn’t) changed about your approach or style since then?

My first boudoir shoot was ages ago (2004).  Back then, everything we did was in a studio with backdrops and big prophoto lights.  I used a tripod and zoom lenses; and I remember spending an enormous amount of time in photoshop to glamorize (ß is that even a word) the final images.  I remember my favorite image was of the client posed demurely on a Victorian settee wearing only a pair of jeans.  I was only comfortable shooting in a studio setting where I controlled the light, in fact, if there were windows in the space, I would cover them up. Koby and I shared the studio space and worked together sometimes back then, but we usually didn’t do boudoir shoots together.

I would say literally every aspect of our boudoir photography is now the opposite of what it was back then!  We almost always work together now, we try to avoid using any artificial light, and we love to work outdoors instead of in a studio.  Our style is all about femininity, romance and beauty. We want your images to be sweet, fun and sexy!


Being a boudoir photographer means that you see people in a very personal and intimate state. How do you make your clients feel comfortable? Do you have any tips or tricks for readers?

Clear, open communication is important!  It builds confidence in the process. We discuss inspiration photos and talk about the attitude the bride wants her collection of images to convey. Sexy is a celebration of romance, loveliness, softness and confidence all rolled into one. It’s knowing that it’s ok to laugh and knowing that no body is perfect. It’s being able to own and celebrate what makes us each different from everyone else. We work to communicate this through our images; it’s a confidence building process with a result that has a far reaching capacity to remind her to be proud of who she is – and celebrate her unique beauty.

Tips for your readers: There is a delicacy to this line of work – and no two photographers approach it the same way. It’s good to know what to expect, and the best way to find out is to ask.  Trust your instincts, a woman’s intuition is often right.


What makes you stand out from other boudoir photographers? (Don’t be shy!)

I think the husband-wife team aspect and our many years of experience help us stand out.  Our romantic, natural style seems to resonate well, too.  But I also think one of the things that makes us different is our level of service - We take away the guess work! We style for you, shop for you, find a location for you, provide makeup, hair styling, and wardrobe, and curate a collection of images to be presented in a leather bound book. Together, Koby and I work with each client to create a very custom gift that will without doubt be treasured!

The iPhone camera is an incredibly powerful tool. After learning a few basics, you can start practicing your own skills with what I like to call a “creative exercise régime.” First of all, l always hold my phone horizontally with two hands. I form a "C" with my left thumb and forefinger and tuck the phone into it so it rests on my hand with my middle finger holding it up along the back. Then with my right hand I form a similar backwards C with the phone against the palm of my hand and use my right thumb to take the picture. By having a steady hold on the phone, I eliminate shake.
